Welcome to Rachel Becker Tutoring

About Me
I received a Bachelor of Science in Health Promotion and Education in 2005 and a Masters of Social Science with a Certification in Women's Studies in 2008. I completed an internship at the National Institute of Cancer in Bethesda at the National Institute of Health.
For four years, I designed and implemented curriculum for approximately a dozen classes as part of an after-school program for high school students. I have served as a guest speaker at several Universities on diverse topics. I have taught numerous online courses offered locally, nationally, and internationally. For the past several years, I have been working as a private academic tutor teaching a range of subjects including ACT/SAT preparation, AP American Government, AP English, AP Psychology, Study Skills, Algebra, Forensics, Biology. My students have ranged from grades 2 through graduate school. I work with each student individually, to assess their learning style. I like to approach teaching in a variety of ways, adapting my lessons to every student, as necessary.
I have a fairly flexible schedule, and I am willing to work with students to create a schedule that is convenient and effective for them.
Here are a few of the things I LOVE about my job:
-I've worked with students who have dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, autism, Aspergers, hyperlexia, auditory processing disorder, and social-emotional processing disorder . With every one of these students, I have learned more and more about what these challenges mean and have figured out what techniques work best with each person's learning style.
-I get to tell nerdy jokes ("Two atoms were walking down the street when one of them said, 'Oh no! I just lost an electron!' The other atom turned to the first and said, 'Are you sure?' and he replied, 'I'm positive!' ") to help students better understand their work. These are jokes which I find personally amusing AND I get to tell them for a legitimate reason.
-I've had the opportunity to talk about politics on a regular basis with several of my students taking AP Gov. Having the opportunity to discuss current politics with people just beginning to understand the world around them is very rewarding.
-I get to learn new things all the time.

Writing
Rachel is very easy to talk to, she listens to me and structures the hour around my goals for that week.
Honestly, I like that she gives me homework because it holds me accountable every week.
Her writing exercises were so helpful- I was very prepared for the essay portion of the exam.
-Ashley

After taking the ACT test for the first time my daughter was looking for some kind of tutoring or help sessions to improve her scores. Rachel was recommended by a friend and it made a world of a difference.Rachel inmmediately focused in my daughter's weak areas. Following two months of twice weekly hours sessions her scores improved tremendously. Rachel's fee was very reasonable and she was very accomodating with the schedule. I would not hesitate to call her again to help my younger children.

Anna took the SAT for a final time in September and scored a 1540, in the 99.8 percentile. She only got one math question on the entire test wrong. Truly remarkable. She has qualified as a national merit semifinalist and is going to complete the application to become a finalist. Thank you again for all your help. Anna is so proud of herself. It is quite an honor.
Take care and thank you again,
Nicole

"Rachel deserves 10 stars!!
She's helped one of my kids
come up at least a letter
grade, and in a few cases, two
letter grades in just 3
sessions! The other child
benefits from her
understanding of her learning
disability. She's outstanding in
every way. "
– Mikayil (9th) and Layla (7th) Seddiki,

THANK YOU doesn't seem to say enough for the help you provided to all 3 of our boys. You are truly a wonderful, kind, and caring person. We are so grateful for YOU and all of your help and patience.
Please keep in touch!
Thanks again!
Tracey & Doug
Rachel Becker is an awesome tutor! My son took the SAT and ACT tests "cold turkey" and needed some help to improve his scores the second time around. Rachel spent 2 hours/day for 4 days with him and he improved his ACT by 4 points and his SAT by 100 points! She was kind and patient and knew how to help him with his specific needs. I highly recommend Rachel Becker.

FAQ's
Canellation Policy:
I require 24 hours notice for canceled lessons. The exceptions to this 24 hour policy are: illness (if a student is sick, I would rather they stay home and get well, instead of exposing me to whatever they have), emergencies (if there is a car accident, or some other emergency, I realize that 24 hours notice is most likely not going to be possible), inclement weather (if the roads are dangerous, and/or the schools are closed due to weather, students are free to let me know that they cannot make it to our lesson). Each student gets one "oops". In other words, if they just forget to give me notice, or wind up spacing out and not attending a lesson, I will not charge them the first time. Thereafter, I charge 1/2 of my regular lesson fee for late cancellations/no shows.
